Crypto exchange fees compared: Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Binance.US
By Daily Edge · Updated · Educational only, not financial advice.
This page lists the published trading fees of four US-available exchanges, each taken from that exchange's own fee page or help article and checked on 2026-10-30. Where an official page didn't show a number, the cell is left blank and says why. Nothing here is estimated or taken from a third-party site.
Before you rely on these numbers. Fee schedules change, can differ by country and account, and usually depend on your 30-day trading volume. Your own rate is the one shown in your account. Re-check the linked page before you trade. Daily Edge has no affiliate relationship with any exchange listed here.
Order-book trading: maker and taker fees
These are the fees on each exchange's order-book product, where you choose between maker (resting limit) and taker (immediately filled) orders. Each figure is for the product named in the first column.
| Exchange and product | Tier (30-day volume) | Maker | Taker | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Advanced | Base tier | blank | blank | No figure published on an official page we could open: Coinbase's Advanced fees help article says to sign in to see your rates, and the public fees page returned a security check, checked 2026-10-30. |
| Kraken Pro (spot crypto) | Tier 1: $0+ | 0.40% | 0.80% | Kraken fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Kraken Pro (spot crypto) | Tier 2: $2.5K+ | 0.30% | 0.60% | Kraken fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Kraken Pro (spot crypto) | Tier 3: $10K+ (or $20K assets on platform) | 0.22% | 0.38% | Kraken fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Gemini ActiveTrader / exchange API | ≥ $0 | 0.600% | 1.200% | Gemini ActiveTrader fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Gemini ActiveTrader / exchange API | $10K (or $1M asset balance) | 0.400% | 0.800% | Gemini ActiveTrader fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Gemini ActiveTrader / exchange API | $25K (or $5M asset balance) | 0.250% | 0.500% | Gemini ActiveTrader fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Binance.US Advanced (Spot) Trading, all pairs except Tier 0 | Below $500M | 0% | 0.02% | Binance.US fees, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Binance.US Advanced (Spot) Trading, Tier 0 pair (BNB/USD) | All volumes | 0% | 0.01% | Binance.US fees, checked 2026-10-30 |
Notes. Kraken: tiers can also be reached through assets on platform (AoP); Kraken says instant-buy volume doesn't count toward the 30-day volume. Gemini: the schedule applies to "all orders placed via the ActiveTrader and exchange API interfaces"; a tier can be reached by volume or by asset balance. Binance.US: the page's text gives 0.02% taker on non-Tier-0 pairs, while its VIP table shows 0.0190% for the same pairs; the page also says paying fees in BNB gives 5% off, and 0.0190% equals 0.02% less 5%, but the page doesn't say which figure applies when. We show the text figure.
Simple buy and app trading
The simple buy and sell screens in each exchange's app usually charge differently from the order book: a fee, plus a spread built into the quoted price.
| Exchange and product | Fee | Spread | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase simple buy/sell | 1% limit order execution fee on each limit buy and limit sell; a Coinbase fee of 1.875% may also apply (varies by payment method) | blank: Coinbase says a spread is included but gives no percentage | Coinbase pricing and fees disclosures, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Kraken instant buy/sell (Kraken app and Kraken.com) | 1% on instant and recurring trades; 1.5% on custom orders; small instant trades up to $2 instead of 1% | blank: Kraken says a spread is included and varies, with no percentage | Kraken fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Gemini app (instant and recurring orders) | blank: the Gemini fee page we opened describes the fees but shows no rate | blank: Gemini says a spread is included, with no percentage | Gemini fee schedule, checked 2026-10-30 |
| Binance.US | blank: Binance.US's fee page doesn't publish a separate instant-buy fee or spread | Binance.US fees, checked 2026-10-30 | |
Order-book spreads aren't published by any of the four exchanges: they change by the second with each market's order book, so this page leaves them out. Coinbase's disclosures page says "No spread is included for Coinbase Advanced because you're interacting directly with the order book"; you still pay the market's own bid-ask gap when you cross it with a taker order.
Worked examples
All examples use the sourced base-tier rates above, a $1,000 position, no leverage and no spread. A round trip is one buy plus one sell, so the fee is charged twice: cost = 2 × $1,000 × fee rate. Exit fees assume the price hasn't moved.
One round trip, all taker (market orders)
- Kraken Pro, Tier 1: 2 × $1,000 × 0.80% = $16.00
- Gemini ActiveTrader, ≥ $0: 2 × $1,000 × 1.20% = $24.00
- Binance.US, non-Tier-0 pair: 2 × $1,000 × 0.02% = $0.40
- Coinbase Advanced: not calculated, because no official base-tier figure was available.
One round trip, all maker (resting limit orders that fill)
- Kraken Pro, Tier 1: 2 × $1,000 × 0.40% = $8.00
- Gemini ActiveTrader, ≥ $0: 2 × $1,000 × 0.60% = $12.00
- Binance.US: 2 × $1,000 × 0% = $0.00
A year of 5 taker round trips a week
5 × 52 = 260 round trips a year.
- Kraken Pro, Tier 1: 260 × $16.00 = $4,160
- Gemini ActiveTrader, ≥ $0: 260 × $24.00 = $6,240
- Binance.US: 260 × $0.40 = $104
Moving up one tier changes the figures. For example, Kraken Pro Tier 3 ($10K+ 30-day volume): 2 × $1,000 × 0.38% = $7.60 per taker round trip; Gemini ActiveTrader at $10K: 2 × $1,000 × 0.80% = $16.00.
Simple buy on Coinbase with a limit order
A $1,000 limit buy: 1% × $1,000 = $10.00 limit order execution fee, plus the 1.875% Coinbase fee if it applies to your payment method (1.875% × $1,000 = $18.75), plus a spread Coinbase doesn't quantify.
Load these fees into the calculator
Each link opens the free trading fee calculator with that exchange's base-tier maker and taker fee, a $1,000 trade and 5 round trips a week filled in. Add your own spread, leverage and maker share there.
- Load Kraken Pro Tier 1 fees (0.40% maker, 0.80% taker)
- Load Gemini ActiveTrader base fees (0.60% maker, 1.20% taker)
- Load Binance.US fees (0% maker, 0.02% taker, non-Tier-0 pairs)
- Coinbase Advanced: no preset, because no official base-tier figure was available on 2026-10-30. Enter the rates from your Coinbase account instead.
How to read this comparison
- Compare the same product. An exchange's order book (Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader, Coinbase Advanced) is priced very differently from its simple buy screen. Check which one you actually use.
- Your tier is what counts. Base-tier rates apply to new and low-volume accounts. Volume or held assets lower them; see each exchange's full table.
- The lowest fee isn't the whole cost. Spread, slippage, deposit and withdrawal fees, and which coins and pairs are listed also matter. Trading fewer times often saves more than switching exchanges.
- Maker rates assume the order fills. A resting limit order can miss the move entirely.
- Re-check the source. Every figure links to the page it came from and the date it was checked. For how each cost works, read crypto trading fees explained.
